Believe it or not, many hospitals, healthcare facilities, and staffing agencies are still behind the times when it comes to administering nurse competency exams. These organizations still rely on Pen & Paper tests to assess nursing job knowledge, skills, and abilities. Pen & paper assessments cause efficiency and validity breakdowns for many reasons. All of these challenges can be eliminated by using online healthcare competency testing (if the vendor’s software meets these requirements). American Nurses Association (ANA) recently reviewed a study published on March 17th in the New England Journal of Medicine that revealed inadequate staffing is tied to higher patient mortality rates. Based on the findings of this study, the authors – researchers from three universities and the Mayo Clinic – suggest a new focus by health policy experts to determine “how the health care payment system can provide incentives rewarding hospitals’ efforts to ensure adequate staffing and improve quality of care.” Prophecy’s new Competency Benchmark Index (PCBI) might provide a solution to the evaluation dilemma.
